Early in 1995 (at age 65) Cleon & Betty were chatting at the breakfast table.Betty had been reading an AARP article about longevity. It stated “that people who have a goal in life live longer”.This was the perfect opening to present his goal:To ride across the United States.
Betty accepted the idea, a 3500 mile ride from Ocean Side, CA to Bar Harbor, ME in 42 days, and agreed to drive the support vehicle.
That goal accomplished, the next was to ride the circumference of the US.There remain only 2 segments to connect all of the dots.In the meantime, there is another goal.
On Cleon’s 80th Birthday (Sat., July 17, 2010) his goal is to ride from Lyons, CO to Highlands, a 20 mile ride with only a 3,000+ feet elevation gain. The accompanying goal is to get as many riders as possible to join him to raise funds for scholarships and the youth program at Highlands.
Last year, Highlands awarded over $16,000 in scholarships so that no child was left out. This fundraiser is to assure that any child, regardless of denomination or location, who wants a wonderful camp experience can come to Highlands.
The History . . .At the age of 60, Cleon watched the monitor screen in the operating room as a lateral meniscus was ground up and sucked out of his knee joint along with shreds of cartilage. There was no cartilage left on the ends of his femur and tibia, just wild red raw bone. The surgeon’s advice: “Cleon, hang up those running shoes!”The only way to expend that excess energy was to cycle. . . .
. . .Anytime there was a meeting or business on the Western Slope, what better way to arrive than on the bike.It was either Trail Ridge or Loveland Pass.In the southern part of the State it was La Veta Pass.
. . . To attend your 50th High School class reunion, what better way to arrive than on the bike (190 miles in one day—13 hours & 20 minutes crank time).
. . . When you wanted to attend the AVMA convention inMinneapolis, Denver, or Salt Lake City - what better way to arrive than on your bike?
“Thanks to a wonderful wife & familythat have supported such crazy episodes! Now I ask you to help me support the children and youththat come to Highlands.”
— Cleon
